In a month where his Cavalry FC side clinched the CPL Shield as 2023 regular season winners, Tommy Wheeldon Jr. has been named Canadian Premier League Manager of the Month for September.
He becomes the first coach this season to be honoured in back-to-back months, after he was also named Manager of the Month for August.
In September, Wheeldon’s Cavalry side went undefeated during the month, winning five of their six matches — four of which came away from home. That included a first-ever win at TD Place Stadium, courtesy of a dramatic stoppage-time winner from William Akio. They also didn’t allow more than a single goal in any of their six matches in September, keeping two clean sheets and scoring nine times.
Other coaches to be honoured this season include Forge’s Bobby Smyrniotis (April), Pacific’s James Merriman (May), Halifax’s Patrice Gheisar (June) and Atlético Ottawa coach Carlos González (July).
