HIGHLIGHTS: Cavalry defeats Pacific to earn 6th win in a row

It’s mission complete for Cavalry FC, who defeated fellow CPL outfit Pacific FC 2-1 at Spruce Meadows on Wednesday evening (4-1 overall on aggregate) and advance to meet Hamilton-based Forge FC in the 2019 Canadian Championship Qualifying Round 2.

An own goal by Pacific’s Marcus Haber just two minutes into the match made Pacific FC’s already-tough task even harder, having come into this game on the end of a 2-0 loss from Westhills Stadium in the first leg of this opening round.

Cavalry’s Julian Buscher added a second in the 67th minute, getting on the end of a low drive into the box by a streaking Malyk Hamilton down the right, hitting the ball first-time and beating goalkeeper Mark Village to double the Cavs’ advantage.

And, while Haber would redeem his own performance with a powerful header in the 74th minute – with the 6-foot-4 striker meeting a cross by Terran Campbell from the left – his contributions weren’t enough to give his side a fighting chance in this home-and-away series.

So, with a sixth win in a row across all competitions, Cavalry switches tracks once again, hosting HFX Wanderers FC on Saturday, May 25 in CPL Spring season action (6:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. MT, available on OneSoccer) before meeting Forge FC in Canadian Championship action on June 5.

Meanwhile, Pacific FC, now eliminated from Voyageurs Cup contention, next prepare for a June 1 meeting with HFX Wanderers away in Halifax (1:00 p.m. ET/11:00 a.m. PT, available on OneSoccer).

Key Performers

Julian Buscher (Cavalry FC) – Dominated in midfield with more passes than any other player on the park, and scored the game-winning goal to extend his team’s winning streak to six in a row. On the defensive end? He regained possession 17 times for his side, more than any of his teammates.

Marcus Haber (Pacific FC) – While his own goal was an unfortunate contribution to the final scoreline, Haber was the only bright spot in a Pacific attack lacking bite. His headed goal was a perfect example of exactly how he can finish a perfect cross.

Nico Pasquotti (Cavalry FC) – His name has come up quite a few times in recent weeks, and for good reason: Pasquotti has been an ever-present attacking threat for Cavalry, contributing on almost every single attacking movement from his team on the day.
