WATCH: Forge, Cavalry players kneel in support of Black Lives Matter in CPL opener

Forge FC and Cavalry FC players kicked off the new Canadian Premier League season with a powerful statement in support of Black Lives Matter on Thursday evening in Prince Edward Island.

Before the historic first match of The Island Games, members from both teams kneeled at the centre circle in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Players will make a similar show of support in unison with the officials and all participants at the stadium during each CPL club’s first match of The Island Games.

All CPL players will sport a Black Lives Matter warmup top for their first match of the regular season. All home and away jerseys have a Black Lives Matter patch on the left sleeve.

An official league statement issued Thursday reads as follows:

“We are committed to taking action to work towards change and are focused on making a powerful impact on our community, helping to bring positive change and using our platform and our voice to support racial equality. We will listen and act on suggestions from our community on how to be a partner that combats racial injustice and continue to push for inclusiveness. The League and Clubs are united and committed to taking meaningful action.”
