Things are awfully tight in the 2020 Canadian Premier League season’s first stage in Prince Edward Island. A bizarre sequence of draws, and some intriguing midweek upsets, have kept seven teams within striking distance of a top-four spot and a chance of advancing to the second round.
Forge FC and Cavalry FC are in the best shape, though there is a five-team logjam just below the two front-runners.
Those five teams – Pacific FC, York9 FC, Valour FC, HFX Wanderers FC, and Atlético Ottawa – all won matches last week and, for all intents and purposes, are contenders.
Here are this week’s CanPL.ca’s power rankings from The Island Games.
1. Pacific FC
MOVEMENT: +3 Last week: No. 4 Record: 2-2-1
Pacific FC overtakes Cavalry FC for the top spot following a comprehensive 2-1 win over the Cavs– their second big victory of last week after beating Valour FC. Their attacking group has exploded, with Marco Bustos, Alejandro Díaz, and Victor Blasco combining for four goals and three assists last week
Upcoming Matches: Atlético Ottawa (Wednesday, 8pm ET), FC Edmonton (Sunday, 3pm ET)
2. Forge FC
MOVEMENT: – Last week: No. 2
Forge’s first Island Games loss was a weird one. Coach Bobby Smyrniotis had valid excuses for their 905 Derby defeat to York9, contesting dubious refereeing calls on the three set-piece goals they conceded. A back-to-basics classic Forge win against Atlético Ottawa righted the ship, and all-but-guaranteed them a spot in round two.
Upcoming Matches: Valour FC (Saturday, 12pm ET).
3. York9 FC
MOVEMENT: +3 Last week: No. 6
The Nine Stripes suffered another last-minute collapseon Saturday when a 10-man Wanderers side scored at the death to earn a draw. It was a disappointing result for Jimmy Brennan’s team, who dictated play with the lead and a man advantage for over an hour. Contrast that with a three set-piece-goal victory over Forge FC, and Y9 look good value for fourth place (tied with Valour)in the standings.
Upcoming Matches: FC Edmonton (Tuesday, 8pm ET), Cavalry FC (Saturday, 3pm ET)
