York9 FC inks Argentinian midfielder Mateo Hernández

York9 FC announced on Tuesday that it has signed Argentinian midfielder Mateo Hernández to a multi-year deal.

Hernández is contracted to York9 through the 2021 CPL season, with further options for 2022 and 2023.

A 22-year-old native of Santa Fe, Hernández arrives at Y9 after spending his entire career with Club Atlético Colón in Argentina’s Primera División. He started in the youth ranks of the club and went on to make a handful of appearances with the first team last season – including against some of Argentina’s biggest outfits, such as Banfield and Argentinos Juniors.

Hernández featured in the Copa Sudamericana, South American’s second continental club competition, vs. Deportivo Municipal of Peru. He was also in the squad when Colón earned a two-legged victory over River Plate of Uruguay before the club bowed out of the tournament.

A technically-gifted player, Hernandez – who can play on either wing and up the middle – is known as an attack-minded midfielder with intelligent passing.

“Since early June, I’ve been in discussions with Mateo’s representative about bringing him to our club,” Y9 managing consultant Angus McNab said in a media release.

“One of the most impressive things is his ability to see a line-breaking pass and release others and that’s something we certainly needed to add to the group.”

Hernández is York9’s fourth confirmed signing for 2020 and second newcomer, joining German attacker Julian Ulbricht, with returnees Alvaro Rivero and Michael Petrasso.
