7 familiar faces eligible for the 2024 CPL-U SPORTS Draft

Entering this year’s CPL-U SPORTS Draft, there are 203 hopeful players eager to hear their names called on draft day.

Ranging from 2019 up to as recently as 2022, however, some of those players have seen their names on the back of CPL jerseys before. On Thursday, at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT this group will find out if they get a second chance to do so.

Here is a list of seven names who have declared for this year’s draft you may recognize from the CPL’s past:

Tyler Attardo

School: York University
Position: Forward
Year: 2nd

Starting with the most experienced CPL player on the list, Attardo entered the CPL history books on his debut, becoming the youngest player in league history at the time during the 2019 season. The Winnipeg native played 20 games with his hometown’s Valour FC, before becoming the youngest player to be transferred as he moved to Chile to play for CDF Vial.

From there, he saw loan spells in Cyprus and France, eventually signing for French fifth-division side Saint-Colomban Locmine where he made ten appearances. Now back in Canada, the forward represents York University. In a combined 16 matches this season (including playoffs), Attardo scored 11 goals for the Lions.

Colin Gander

School: Toronto Metropolitan University
Position: Fullback
Year: 4th

Another player with plenty of CPL experience, Colin Gander played 15 matches for Halifax Wanderers in 2022, getting two assists in that stretch. Selected 11th overall in the 2022 CPL-U SPORTS Draft from the University of Guelph, Gander is eligible for a second chance, this time coming out of Toronto with the TMU Bold.

The Kitchener, Ont. native was successful in his time with the Guelph Gryphons, winning an OUA title in 2021 after joining the school from NCAA Division I Missouri State University. At the beginning of this past season, TMU Bold head coach Filip Prostran spoke on Gander’s ability to Toronto Metropolitan University Athletics saying “Colin’s work rate, soccer IQ, and leadership are traits every coach looks for.”

Gander also has plenty of experience at the League1 Ontario level, having represented Guelph United in 2021 and 2023.

Svyatik Artemenko

School: Thompson Rivers University
Position: Goalkeeper
Year: 3rd

Raised in Winnipeg, but of Ukrainian descent, Artemenko has spent time with both York United and Valour FC in his short career thus far. While not having made a CPL appearance in that time, the goalkeeper has played one Canadian Championship match with League1 Ontario side Guelph United.

The Ukrainian-Canadian took a break from football in 2022, just after signing with a Ukrainian second-division side, to enlist and serve with the Ukrainian military.

He rejoined Guelph United after his four-month deployment and return to Canada. Artemenko is a 2021 League1 Ontario champion and a one-time L1O West Golden Glove award winner.

Prince Amanda

School: University of Alberta
Position: Attacker
Year: 2nd

Amanda has made nine appearances in the CPL for FC Edmonton but left the club in December 2021. He had a goal and an assist in the 2019 CPL Fall Season in just two appearances.

Since then, he’s played for Oakville Blue Devils FC and Alliance United in League1 Ontario, but enters the draft representing the University of Alberta Golden Bears.

Born in Tanzania but raised in Edmonton, the forward had four goals and one assist in 13 games this past season for the Golden Bears. Now 22 years old, Amanda has previously received call-ups to Canadian youth national teams.

Frank Facchineri

School: University of Windsor
Position: Attacker
Year: 2nd

Frank Facchineri has four CPL appearances to his name back in 2020 with Atlético Ottawa in their inaugural season after being loaned out by Vancouver Whitecaps.

Following his loan spell in the nation’s capital, Facchineri was sent on loan to San Diego Loyal of the USL Championship.

A native of Windsor, the defender captained his country at the 2019 U-17 World Cup in Brazil after scoring the game-winning penalty kick at the Concacaf U-17 Championship to qualify them for the tournament. At six feet tall, he describes himself as dominant in the air defensively and excels in 1v1 situations.

Max Piepgrass

School: University of Windsor
Position: Midfielder
Year: 2nd

The youngest player on this list, Piepgrass made two CPL appearances with Cavalry FC in 2021.

An Alberta native, Piepgrass plays with the Calgary Foothills in League1 Alberta, but enters the draft representing the dominant Cape Breton University Capers who won the 2023 National championship. He made 12 appearances this season in Canada West, scoring twice and adding an assist.

Piepgrass represented his home province at the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games. In April 2022, he was called up for two games with the Canada U-20 side against Costa Rica.

Cape Breton University leads the way in both total players selected (12) and total CPL games played (176), a good sign for Piepgrass.

Raphaël Garcia

School: Carleton University
Position: fullback
Year: 4th

Garcia joined Valour FC from the Montréal Impact Academy in January 2019 and stayed with the Winnipeg club until December 2020.

With Valour he played four games in the Spring Season and an additional twelve in the following Fall Season, where he tallied two assists.

An OUA all-star this campaign, the 24-year-old Ottawa native captained the Ravens to a 3-1 OUA Championship victory against York. He led U SPORTS this season with eight assists in 12 matches, adding three goals.
