CanMNT’s Alphonso Davies re-signs with Bayern Munich through 2025

Canadian superstar Alphonso Davies has officially extended his stay at Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, with the club announcing on Monday that they’ve re-signed the 19-year-old through 2025 (extending a contract that previously would’ve ended in 2023).

Davies, who signed for Bayern in 2018 after a breakout campaign with the Vancouver Whitecaps, truly made a name for himself in world football over the past few months, earning a starting spot 24 times over the 2019-20 season, making 31 appearances total.

The Edmonton native has emerged this year as one of the world’s top young talents, excelling for his club as a pure left-fullback while also contributing for the Canadian national team in a more advanced role (scoring the winning goal in Canada’s 2-0 win over the United States in October).

“I am very happy. FC Bayern is one of the best clubs in the world, and for me it’s a dream come true to play here,” Davies said in a club statement. “I felt happy from day one. I want to win as many titles as possible with this club. The mentality of always wanting to win everything is in FC Bayern’s DNA.”

The contract extension will be extremely welcome news to Canadian fans, as it suggests that the national team’s best player will continue to play top-level club football for the next five years.

This deal means that Davies will, in all likelihood, be a Bayern Munich player for the next two World Cup cycles for Canada. He’ll be relied on heavily by Les Rouges in next year’s qualification campaign for the 2022 tournament, and he’ll definitely be front-and-centre in Canada’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup, of which Canada will be a joint-host.

“Alphonso Davies is a player who has already achieved a high level of performance at a young age and at the same time still has great potential for development,” said Bayern board member Oliver Kahn.

“Anyone who can consistently play at the top level at FC Bayern at such a young age can have a great career ahead of them. We are all happy to have him with us in the long term. He brings an incredible amount to the table and we are sure that we will still have a lot of joy with him.”

Having already emerged as a top under-21 player in the world, Davies will continue to develop in Germany alongside other world-class players, earning experience on the grandest stage in the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League.
