Atlético Ottawa has bolstered its defence after completing the signing of Canadian defender Karl Ouimette running through until the end of the 2024 Canadian Premier League season.

Ouimette, who is from Terrebonne in Québec, came through CF Montreal’s academy alongside fellow Atlético Ottawa defender Maxim Tissot. With Montréal, he would win the Canadian Championship in 2013 and 2014. He then won the MLS Supporters’ Shield with the New York Red Bulls in 2015.

The 30-year-old defender also featured 18 times for the Canadian Men’s National Team between 2013-16. He spent the past five seasons with Indy Eleven of the USL Championship.

“Karl is a player that has been on our radar for a few months now as we knew there would be a chance to sign him during the off-season,” said Atlético Ottawa head coach Carlos González. “He is a very versatile defender who can adapt to multiple positions, including holding midfielder. He is a great addition to the squad as he provides solidity in defence as well as leadership qualities on and off the pitch.”

“I am very pleased to announce the signing of Karl Ouimette,” Atleti CEO Fernando López. “Karl is an experienced defender that has played throughout North America and is sure to bring even greater quality to our strong backline. His 18 appearances for Canada and track record of performing in high-pressure environments will be key as Atlético Ottawa push for more titles in the coming years.”

Atlético Ottawa had the second best defensive record in the Canadian Premier League last season, with just 29 conceded in 28 matches en route to a regular season championship. However, with Drew Beckie’s retirement and Sergio Camus returning to Atlético Madrid B, Ouimette’s signing will bring welcome reenforcement across the backline.
