On Friday, the Canadian men’s national team learned the nations that will be joining them in Group D for the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup: Guatemala, Cuba and the winner of preliminary match 7 (one of Trinidad & Tobago, Guadeloupe, Guyana and Grenada).
As a result of being fourth in the Concacaf rankings, Canada was placed in pot one, and drawn into Group D prior to the official Gold Cup draw. Their group stage opponents, Guatemala are currently ranked 116 in the world, while Cuba is ranked 165th. Canada will find out the final team in Group D on June 20 at the conclusion of the Gold Cup qualifying tournament in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Canada reached the semifinal round of the last Gold Cup, held in 2021, bowing out to Mexico on a stoppage-time winner. Les Rouges won their only Gold Cup in 2000. Mexico and the United States are the only other winners of the tournament.
