Canada moves closer to CONCACAF ‘Hex’ in latest FIFA rankings

Canada jumped three spots in the FIFA World Rankings published on Thursday, moving up to 75th spot and closer to a potential berth in CONCACAF’s World Cup qualifying “Hex” stage next summer.

The latest ranking saw Canada surpass Panama – who dropped three places after losing to 167th-ranked Bermuda in CONCACAF Nations League action this month – and draw closer to 72nd-ranked El Salvador, who hold the sixth and final Hex spot.

El Salvador also dropped three places after losing to the 155th-ranked Dominican Republic 1-0 earlier this month. Canada, meanwhile, won both of their Nations League tilts against Cuba.

Qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup begins next June with CONCACAF’s top six-ranked sides competing in “the Hex,” which will see three teams qualify directly for the World Cup in Qatar. Canada, currently seventh, will need to climb further for a spot in that group, which will be seeded based on the June 2020 FIFA Rankings.

Canada returns to Nations League action on Oct. 15 when they host the United States at BMO Field in Toronto.
