Canada’s Davies included in Bayern’s UEFA Champions League squad

Alphonso Davies was named to Bayern Munich’s UEFA Champions League roster on Tuesday ahead of the tournament’s knockout stage.

The German giants are set to face last year’s finalists Liverpool in the Round of 16, beginning with a first leg match at Anfield on Feb. 19.

The second leg is set for Bayern’s Allianz Arena on March 13.

Davies, who joined Bayern Munich in January on a then-MLS-record transfer fee of more than $22-million USD, has been quickly thrown into the mix in Munich, being included in all three matchday squads since the Bundesliga returned from its winter break.

The 18-year-old Canadian international made his second and most significant Bundesliga appearance over the weekend in a 3-1 loss away to Bayer Leverkusen, coming on for James Rodriguez in the 77th minute.

Bayern, the six-time reigning German champions, are currently third in the Bundesliga, trailing leaders Dortmund by seven points.

Davies, who has three goals and nine caps for Canada’s men’s national team, expected to play a key role in Canada’s run in this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The Edmonton-native was voted one of the 2018 Canadian Players of the Year in December.
