CanMNT to play September’s World Cup 2022 qualifiers at BMO Field in Toronto

The Canadian men’s national team will open its final round of qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup at home with their first matches on home soil in almost two years.

Canada Soccer announced Monday that John Herdman’s side will play both Honduras (Thursday, Sept. 2) and El Salvador (Wednesday, Sept. 8) at BMO Field in Toronto this September as part of Concacaf’s final round of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Qualifiers.

All home matches will be held in Canada subject to Government of Canada authorization, Canada’s governing body said, with fans permitted pending relevant public health approvals from the City of Toronto and Province of Ontario. Ticket sales information is set to be shared in the coming days.

Those two home matches sandwich a third match in the September window – away to the United States in Nashville, Tennessee on Sunday, Sept. 5.

Canada is set to face the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Honduras, Panama, and El Salvador in the final round – known as the “octagon” – with three teams gaining automatic qualification to the World Cup and a fourth side placed in an intercontinental playoff with a representative from another FIFA confederation.

Canada will play seven home matches from September to March 2022. Their last home match came October 15, 2019 when Les Rouges dispatched the US 2-0 at BMO Field in Concacaf Nations League play

Herdman’s side had played its entire World Cup qualifying campaign on the road, taking “home” matches in the US due to COVID-19 restrictions.
