CanMNT to play Suriname in two-legged Concacaf Nations League quarter-final

Concacaf announced on Wednesday the matchups and schedule for the 2024-25 Concacaf Nations League quarter-finals, which will take place in the November international window.

The Canadian men’s national team will be playing Suriname in a two-legged tie, with the first leg played on Friday, Nov. 15 in Suriname and the return fixture played on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at BMO Field in Toronto.

Whichever side wins the tie on aggregate will advance to the Nations League semi-finals, to be played this March at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

Canada were one of four pre-seeded Concacaf teams who advanced directly to the Nations League quarter-finals, along with Mexico, the United States and Panama. As the second-ranked team in the latest Concacaf Rankings, Canada will take on the third-best of the four sides who qualified via the Nations League A group stage. In this case, that’s the better of the two group stage runners-up — Suriname finished second in Group A behind Costa Rica but ahead of Guatemala, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Guyana.

The other three quarter-final matchups will see Mexico take on Honduras, the United States play Jamaica, and Panama against Costa Rica.

Suriname are ranked 138th in the FIFA World Rankings, the 14th-highest side in Concacaf. Their squad does feature a number of experienced players at European clubs, including Real Sociedad striker Sheraldo Becker. They have lost just one match in 2024 so far, a 1-0 defeat at Guadeloupe, and they produced an impressive 1-1 draw with Costa Rica during the October window.

Canada have played Suriname twice before, the first being a 2-1 win at Mexico’s Estadio Azteca in the 1977 Concacaf Championship.

More recently, the two sides met in the final match of the first round group stage in Concacaf’s 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying. Canada needed to win to advance to the second round and they did, 4-0 in Chicago, in what was one of the first significant tests of their qualification campaign.

In the previous edition of the Concacaf Nations League, Canada lost their quarter-final tie against Jamaica on away goals. They’ll therefore be hoping to reverse their fortunes and return to the final four, after going all the way to the Final in the 2022-23 competition.
