CanMNT to take on Mexico in September friendly in Texas

On Tuesday, Canada Soccer announced yet another friendly for the men’s national team as they confirmed they will be taking on Mexico on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

The match will be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, one of the 16 venues which will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup across Canada, Mexico and the United States.

“We are thrilled to announce another high-quality opponent for a friendly with our Men’s National Team,” said Kevin Blue, incoming Canada Soccer General Secretary and CEO, in a press release. “Continuing to play against the top teams will greatly increase our preparations for major tournaments on the road to our home FIFA World Cup.”

Canada’s last match against Mexico came in a famous 2-1 World Cup qualifying victory at the ‘Iceteca’ in Edmonton on November 16, 2021. Canada last defeated Mexico outside of Canada in the 2000 Gold Cup quarter-final by that same scoreline on a golden goal from Richard Hastings.

Mexico are currently ranked 15th in the world, second-highest in Concacaf, and won the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup. After losing the 2023-24 Concacaf Nations League quarter-finals to Jamaica on aggregate, Canada dropped to 50th.

Last week, CanMNT announced they will play against the sixth-ranked Netherlands national team on June 6 in Rotterdam. Both matches against high-calibre opposition will serve as continued preparation as they build toward the 2026 World Cup.
