Alphonso Davies is a German league champion for the second time in his young career.

The Canadian teenager featured in Bayern Munich’s narrow 1-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Tuesday, as the Bavarian club clinched the Bundesliga title with two games remaining in the season.

The Canadian phenom started at left fullback for Die Roten, as he has done 22 times this season. Davies played 79 minutes of the match against Bremen, before a second yellow card for a borderline challenge earned him the first red-card expulsion of his professional career.

Davies has garnered a lot of attention for his pace in recent weeks, which was certainly on display again on Tuesday. In the first half, the 19-year-old Canadian was clocked running at a hair over 36.5 kilometres per hour, which is the highest speed ever recorded in the German topflight (since measurement began, in 2013).

Davies’ sending off came late in the match for a high-speed tackle, after he’d picked up a first yellow in the 19th minute. He will be suspended for the club’s match on Saturday against Freiburg. The Canadian returned to the field post-game to join in the title celebrations with his teammates.

Bayern’s 24th win of the 2019-20 campaign has put them 10 points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who won’t be able to make up the gap with just three games left on their schedule. The Bavarian side has won the Bundesliga championship for the eighth straight time (and the 29th in their history).

Davies was a member of Bayern’s title-winning squad in 2018-19, his first season with the club, although he only played six times during that campaign. He was a much more important piece this time around, with new coach Hansi Flick unlocking his talent on the left flank. Davies has logged 28 total appearances in the Bundesliga this season, contributing three goals and four assists.

Once the final two matches of the season have been played, Davies and Bayern Munich will turn their attention to the DFB-Pokal. The final, where they’ll take on Bayer Leverkusen in an attempt to win the German double for the second straight year, will be broadcast live on OneSoccer on Saturday, July 4.
