CanPL.ca Newsroom: Black History Month roundtable feat. Jordan Wilson, Jamar Dixon & Kwame Awuah

Story updated January 2023

CanPL.ca’s Kristian Jack sat down with Jordan Wilson, Jamar Dixon, and Kwame Awuah for a roundtable discussion centred around Black History Month.

In an hour-long conversation, the three former CPL players open up about a variety of important topics, sharing stories of their own experiences both at home and abroad

“Black History Month is extremely special to me, but what I’ve said before in many other interviews is it’s not only a month,” Dixon said to open the discussion. “It’s all of our lifestyle, this is day-to-day, this is the whole year, this is our life. It’s just great that we can raise awareness and continue to help people understand what we deal with, we go through, and help people understand things from our point of view.”

Throughout the show, Dixon, Wilson, and Awuah shared plenty of personal stories of growing up and their experiences as footballers of colour, as well as their thoughts on what Black History Month means to them.

They also reflect on the CPL’s own Black Lives Matter movement, particularly the compelling player-led protest during the Island Games in 2020.

“We did something positive that was sparked by something negative,” Awuah recalled. “In my head, what I was thinking was that these are guys that, on the field we might be beefing, we might be talking smack, it’s competition, but off the field this shows real character. I can count on these guys in the face of adversity.”
