CanWNT Form Guide: How Stoney’s squad is shaping up heading into Argentina friendlies

Last week, Canadian women’s national team head coach Casey Stoney announced her squad for the ‘BC Series’ pair of upcoming friendlies against Argentina — her first time coaching the national team on Canadian soil.

Canada are set to take on the Argentines in a pair of matches, starting on Friday, April 4 (7:30 p.m. PT / 10:30 p.m. ET) at BC Place. They follow that with Tuesday, April 8’s clash (7 p.m. PT / 10 p.m. ET) at Starlight Stadium, home of the Canadian Premier League’s Pacific FC. Both matches will be broadcast on OneSoccer.

Stoney has already been forced to make a number of changes to her initial squad. Evelyne Viens, Clarisa Larisey and Olivia Smith withdrew due to injury and were replaced by Nyah Rose, as well as CanWNT first-time callups Holly Ward and Kayla Briggs.

But this group once again features an exciting mix of core pieces of this national team, as well as some promising young prospects.

Here is a quick look at the recent form of each player coming into national team camp, and who might feature during the two matches:

Goalkeepers

Sabrina D’Angelo, Aston Villa

D’Angelo has carved out a starting role at Villa this season, and is coming off a strong performance in a 2-1 victory over Liverpool this past weekend, which ended a difficult stretch of five straight losses for Villa in all competitions.

Lysianne Proulx, Juventus

Proulx has struggled for minutes this season with Juventus, making just three appearances behind French international goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin.

Kailen Sheridan, San Diego Wave

Sheridan is off to a decent start to the NWSL season with San Diego, making seven saves through their first three matches of the campaign (1-1-1).

Defenders

Shelina Zadorsky, West Ham United

Zadorsky has been a consistent starter for West Ham this season, and played 73 minutes over the weekend in a stunning 2-2 draw with FA WSL league leaders Chelsea.

Jayde Rivière, Manchester United

Riviere is in solid form for United, starting their past three matches — as the club have kept clean sheets in consecutive matches, including a 2-0 victory over Everton on Sunday during which Rivière went 88 minutes.

Ashley Lawrence, Chelsea

After a bit of a tough run of form for the FA WSL league leaders, Lawrence has played the full 90 in Chelsea’s past two league matches — including assisting on a stoppage time winner against Manchester City on March 23.

Jade Rose, Harvard Crimson

Returning from an injury that limited her to a role as a training player at February’s Pinatar Cup, Rose is looking to make her first appearance for Canada since an October 1-1 draw with Spain.

Vanessa Gilles, Lyon

Gilles wasn’t in the lineup for Lyon this past weekend in a 4-0 victory over Fleury, but she went the full 90 midweek in a 4-1 win over Bayern Munich in the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final. The week prior, Gilles scored against Saint-Étienne in a 5-0 victory — her stunning eighth goal of the season in all competitions from centreback.

Gabrielle Carle, Washington Spirit

After helping the Washington Spirit reach last year’s NWSL final, Carle is again proving to be a key player for the club this season. She has started all three of their matches, as they currently sit third in the table (2-0-1).

Bianca St-Georges, Utah Royals

St-Georges has started all three of Utah’s matches this season in more of an attacking role, scoring in a season-opening draw with Bay FC.

Midfielders

Julia Grosso, Chicago Stars

It hasn’t been a great start to the season for the Chicago Stars, who were trounced 6-0 in their season opener against the Orlando Pride 6-0, and have lost all three of their games so far this season. Grosso, however, has started all three.

Emma Regan, AFC Toronto

After wrapping up the 2024-25 Elitedivisonen campaign in November with HB Køge, Regan returned to Canada to sign with AFC Toronto in December. While the NSL is still in pre-season, Regan did start two of three matches for CanWNT at the Pinatar Cup in February, and has been a standout performer in midfield for Les Rouges of late.

Jesse Fleming, Portland Thorns

After missing the first two matches of the 2025 NWSL season through injury, Fleming made her campaign debut on Saturday against the North Carolina Courage in a 0-0 draw on Saturday. She came off the bench in the 59th minute, and fitness might dictate less of a role this camp for the CanWNT captain.

Marie-Yasmine Alidou, Portland Thorns

Alidou made a big transfer splash last week when it was announced that she had signed with the Portland Thorns after two seasons with Benfica in Portugal. The 29-year-old may not have made her NWSL debut yet as she waits for proper work permits, but she is still in form, having scored in a March 22 3-2 victory over Sporting Lisbon in the Portuguese Cup.

Carly Wickenheiser, BK Häcken

The 28-year-old Wickenheiser started both of BK Häcken’s first two matches of the Damallsvenskan in midfield. Albeit, it has been a difficult first few weeks to the Swedish top-flight season for the 2024 runners up, who lost both of their season opening fixtures.

Quinn, Vancouver Rise

After recovering from injury, this is Quinn’s first call-up under Casey Stoney. They haven’t appeared for Canada since converting their effort in a penalty shootout loss to Germany in the Olympic quarter-finals. Quinn has also since signed with the Vancouver Rise in the NSL.

Kayla Briggs, Michigan State Spartans

Following two seasons with Providence, Briggs recently transferred to Michigan State. The 19-year-old Canadian youth international had three goals and two assists in 12 games, all starts, last year for the Friars.

Forwards

Nichelle Prince, Kansas City Current

Prince has been limited to 79 minutes off the bench to start the season with the Kansas City Current, but has appeared in all three of their matches so far.

Janine Sonis, Racing Louisville

Sonis started Racing Louisville’s first two matches of the NWSL season as a left winger, before coming off the bench in the 66th minute this past weekend in a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Stars.

Adriana Leon, San Diego Wave

After leaving Aston Villa to join San Diego in February, Leon is quickly making an impact in her new home, starting two of three matches and scoring in a 3-2 victory against the Utah Royals on March 22.

Deanne Rose, Leicester City

Since returning from injury with Leicester City last month, Rose has played a substitute role for the Foxes of late in the NWSL. She has been held scoreless in 13 matches with the club this season.

Nyah Rose, SMU Mustangs

Having made her senior national team debut in December, this is a third consecutive call-up for the 19-year-old striker. Rose is in her college off-season, but did score five times in eleven matches for SMU in her sophomore campaign.

Holly Ward, Vancouver Rise

Another first-time callup at this camp is Holly Ward, who replaced the injured Olivia Smith. Ward wrapped up her final collegiate season with the Texas Longhorns in November, scoring nine goals and adding seven assists before signing with the Rise in the NSL.
