CanWNT set to face China, Mexico and Chinese Taipei at 2025 Pinatar Cup

The Canadian women’s national team will play China, Mexico and Chinese Taipei at the 2025 Pinatar Cup in February, it was announced on Monday. The friendly invitational tournament will be held in Murcia, Spain behind closed doors, with Canada set to face China on February 19, Mexico on February 22 and Chinese Taipei on February 25.

The matches will be the start of the team’s 2025 schedule, and the first three matches under new head coach Casey Stoney, who was announced as Bev Priestman’s replacement earlier this month.

“I’m really excited to get started,” Stoney said in a press release on Monday. “This camp is the first step in building the foundation for what we want to achieve in 2025 and beyond. Each of these teams will present unique challenges, and it’s a great opportunity to assess the players and see where the team is at.”

Canada has played China and Mexico many times over the years, but this will be just the second meeting with Chinese Taipei, with the first being a 2-0 loss in 1987. The team has an 8-5-14 record against China, but has won the last seven meetings including the most recent match, a friendly before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Canada has a winning record of 22-3-3 against their fellow Concacaf side Mexico, with the most recent meetings being a pair of sendoff friendlies before the Paris 2024 Olympic Games last summer. Canada won the first of those matches 2-0 in Montreal, before the sides drew 1-1 in Toronto a few days later.

Broadcast information for the tournament will be shared in the coming week, according to Canada Soccer.
