CanWNT squad named for World Cup warm-up against England

Canada Soccer announced Thursday the 23 players who will make up Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team roster for an international friendly against England at Academy Stadium in Manchester, England on April 5, with goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo, and defenders Jayde Riviere and Vanessa Gilles returning to the team having not made the squad for the 2019 Algarve Cup.

Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan and midfielders Rebecca Quinn and Diana Matheson miss out on this latest call-up, with the latter two out with injuries.

“We know England is a very good opponent and they will want to put on their best performance at home, so this is an ideal moment to test what we have been working on as we prepare for France,” said Canada head coach Kenneth Heiner-Moller. “We remain focused on improving ourselves, our processes and tactics, to peak in June, but we know heading into England that this match will be the kind of competition we should be preparing for.”

These two teams meet nearly four years after competing against one another in the quarterfinal stage of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada, with the Three Lionesses picking up a 2-1 win to set up a semi-final clash with Japan. Canada has played England 12 times in the past, registering five wins and seven loses.
