CanWNT’s Sydney Collins replaced by Gabrielle Carle on 2024 Olympic squad after injury

The Canadian Olympic Committee revealed on Saturday that fullback Sydney Collins has been removed from the Canadian women’s national team roster following a fracture on her left leg. Collins will be replaced on the 18-player squad by Gabrielle Carle.

This injury was sustained during Canada’s behind-closed-door friendly against Nigeria in preparation for the tournament on Thursday. The 24-year-old Collins had been working her way back from a previous injury that kept her out since February.

“Our hearts go out to Sydney during this difficult time,” said CanWNT head coach Bev Priestman. “She has worked incredibly hard to return in time for Paris 2024, and while this is a setback, we know she will come back stronger. She will be with us in spirit every step of the way. With the depth and resilience of our roster, it’s a next-player-up mentality, and both Gabby and Desiree’s experience will be invaluable to our team’s success.”

Carle, meanwhile, a native of Québec City, has 46 caps for Canada and was a member of the Gold Medal-winning side at Tokyo 2020. She has been in excellent form for the national team of late, including picking up an assist on the winning goal in a 2-1 pre-Olympic friendly against Australia.

With Carle moving up to the main roster, veteran midfielder Desiree Scott will take her place as an alternate.
