Cavalry signs training camp invitee Tofa Fakunle

Cavalry FC brought in a familiar face on Wednesday, signing Calgary native and former Calgary Foothills player Tofa Fakunle to a contract.

The 24-year-old played alongside current Cavs players Nico Pasquotti, Sergio Camargo, Jonathan Wheeldon, Nik Ledgerwood, Dominick Zator and others with the Foothills, including during their PDL-winning campaign in 2018.

A winger by trade, Fakunle is a graduate of the University of Northern British Columbia and arrives as the latest Calgary Foothills player signed by their former coach, Tommy Wheeldon Jr.

“Tofa is a signing that will add further character and quality to our team,” Wheeldon Jr. said. “He is a dynamic attacking player, renown for scoring or creating important goals. He will wear his heart on his sleeve and will honour our crest.”

Fakunle made 14 appearances for Foothills in 2019, scoring seven goals and five assists before falling in the Western Conference quarter-finals. Before that he took part in Cavalry’s training camp this Spring in the Dominican Republic. At five-foot-four, Fakunle set to be one of the smallest players in the CPL.

“This means a lot to me,” Fakunle said. “I believe I have worked very hard to earn my opportunity. As a kid and till this day all I ever wanted to do was to play professional football.”
