Concacaf Champions Cup Draw: Forge get Chivas Guadalajara; Cavalry face Orlando City SC

The 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup draw took place on Wednesday evening, with both Forge FC and Cavalry FC being drawn out of the second pot of teams in the newly formatted tournament.

With 22 teams taking part in round one of the tournament, the Canadian Premier League clubs were guaranteed competition against either an MLS or Liga MX side.

Forge were selected out of the pot first and they were placed against fifth-place Liga MX side Chivas Guadalajara, a two-time winner of the Concacaf competition and twelve-time league winner.

Led by Serbian manager Veljko Paunovic, the side are made up almost exclusively of Mexican talent, including leading goal scorer Roberto Alvarado.

Cavalry’s sphere was drawn just a couple picks later as they were placed in slot ‘B8’ in a matchup with the MLS’s Orlando City SC. The Orlando club finished second in the Western Conference this season before being eliminated by eventual MLS Cup Champions Columbus Crew in the playoffs.

Orlando had two of the top twelve goal scorers in the MLS this season with Duncan McGuire (13 goals) and Facundo Torres (14 goals) leading their front line.

The MLS Cup quarter-finalists are home to one Canadian talent, former Toronto FC left back Luca Petrasso.

Round one of the Champions Cup will take place in February with the first leg being played between February 6 – February 15 and the second leg soon after between February 20 – February 29.
