CPL Editorial’s Armen Bedakian and Marty Thompson share their picks for the first match between Forge FC and York9 FC.

Q1: In what minute will the first goal be scored?

– 0’-25’
– 26’-45’
– 45-75’
– 76’-90’

Armen: You’ve got to think, with the weight of the occasion, and the pressure to get a historic win, that this match will have the feeling of a final, right off the bat, so you can probably rule out an early goal-fest. But I also don’t see the crowd needing to wait for the second half either.

Q2: Which club will receive the first yellow card?

– Forge FC
– York9 FC
– Neither

Marty: Indications from pre-season would suggest York9 as being a physical side, especially with midfield hulk Joesph Di Chiara snapping at attackers in the middle of the pitch. However, Forge FC will see Saturday as their day, their event. If York9 gets out to a lead, we could see some sloppy, frustrated tackles from the home side lead to a card or two early in the match.

Q3: How will the first goal be scored?

– Right Foot
– Left Foot
– Header
– None

Armen: This is a tough one – but, if you work from the logic that a striker will score the first goal, both Emery Welshman of Forge FC and Simon Adjei of York9 FC are right-footed…

Q4: Which club will have more possession of the ball?

– Forge FC
– York9 FC

Marty: First thought goes to Forge FC on this one, considering the possession-based style of play head coach Bobby Smyriotis is expected to employ. York9 wouldn’t be a bad shout either, though, considering the talented ball-first midfielders of Manny Aparicio and Wataru Murofushi.

Q5: Which club will commit the most fouls?
– Forge FC
– York9 FC

Armen: Forge FC will be celebrating soccer in Hamilton on this historic day, but you can be sure York9 FC will be hungry to show they’re not just fodder for the occasion. With a heavy presence in midfield, perhaps Jimmy Brennan’s side is more inclined toward a tackle or two.

Q6: Which goalkeeper will record a clean sheet?
– Forge FC
– York9 FC
– Neither

Marty: Not so fast on the 3-3 thriller. Will the sense of the occasion get to both sides creating a tense, “cup final” atmosphere? If so, who will scrape home the only goal in a 1-0 win? Both teams have some dangerous set piece options, making each choice of the three quite plausible.

Q7: Which club will win the game?
– Forge FC
– York9 FC
– Draw

Armen: Ultimately, I’m expecting a wild back-and-forth filled with goals, drama, and an eventual triumphant outfit. Who will it be? Forge FC looked clean in pre-season, but there’s something about York9 FC that makes the idea of a spoiler on the day an intriguing one.
