CPL Headlines: Vancouver FC add star full-back; a CPL original hangs up his boots

The 2025 Canadian Premier League regular season is officially less than a month away, but signings have not slowed down.

This was particularly true on the west coast this past week, with multiple clubs adding what could be key pieces to their 2025 rosters. Plus, a CPL original announced his retirement, and multiple clubs released their kits for this upcoming season.

Here were the biggest stories from around the CPL this past week:

Vancouver FC sign full-back Kunle Dada-Luke, announce the retirement of goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulos

Another member of the 2021 Pacific FC championship team joined provincial rivals Vancouver FC this week, with the announcement that the Eagles have signed 25-year-old full-back Kunle Dada-Luke.

The Mississauga native has been one of the league’s top full-backs over his past four seasons with the Tridents, making 117 appearances in all competitions. He will inject a new dynamic attacking ability down the flanks, and has also developed into one of the CPL’s best one-v-one defenders.

Ironically, Dada-Luke will be replacing Kadin Chung at right-back with Vancouver FC, after Chung returned to Pacific FC earlier this off-season in what has become an intriguing Salish Sea derby swap. The two sides meet for the first time this season on Saturday, April 26 in Langley.

Vancouver FC also announced this week the retirement of goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulos. A CPL original, who was part of the league for each of its first six seasons, he initially played for Cavalry FC and then York United before joining VFC last season. Giantsopoulos made 65 appearances in all competitions for CPL clubs.

Giantsopoulos, however, will remain with the club as its new goalkeeper coach — an announcement they made on Saturday. Vancouver also revealed that Philip Lund is joining the club as an assistant coach, while Azad Palani returns for the 2025 season.

Pacific FC sign Mexican striker Emanuel Montejano

Adding more attacking weapons was a key goal for Pacific FC this off-season, and they added what could be another key piece to that puzzle this past Wednesday with the signing of 23-year-old Mexican striker Emanuel Montejano.

Montejano, 23, came through the Pumas UNAM academy, before making 16 appearances in all competitions with the first team, scoring twice. He also spent time on loan with the club’s second team in Liga de Expansión — and this past season with Celaya, who he helped reach the Liga de Expansión Apertura final.

After the Island club scored a league-low 27 goals this past campaign, Montejano joins a revamped Pacific FC attack, with new additions Marco Bustos and Ronan Kratt.

Valour FC add Canadian youth international forward Myles Morgan

Yet another Canadian youth international striker is headed to Winnipeg with Valour signing 19-year-old Myles Morgan on Wednesday.

Morgan, who was born in Toronto, came through the Toronto FC academy before debuting with Toronto FC II in 2023. He spent this past season with Vancouver Whitecaps 2, scoring twice in 21 matches.

He has been prolific with the Canadian U-20 national team as well, scoring six times in eight matches — including a hat-trick against Dominica last year.

Earlier this off-season, Valour also signed former Canadian U-17 striker Erik Pop, adding to an exciting young attack for the 2025 campaign and beyond.

Cavalry FC sign full-back Mihail Gherasimencov on loan from Whitecaps 2

Following the success of Jay Herdman last season, Cavalry FC added another player on loan from Vancouver Whitecaps 2 on Saturday: full-back Mihail Gherasimencov.

The 19-year-old is primarily a left-back, but can also play further up the left flank when needed. He tied for the team lead in assists last season with the Whitecaps 2, putting up five as well as two goals. He also finished second on the team in key passes, with 38.

Born in Moldova, Gherasimencov moved to Calgary in 2016, suiting up with the Calgary Blizzard SC before joining the Whitecaps organization. He has represented Moldova five times at the U-19 level, scoring against Kazakhstan in an international friendly in 2023.

Halifax Wanderers reveal 2025 Home and Alternate kits

Halifax Wanderers 2025 kits

At an event inside the Light House Arts Centre on Tuesday, the Halifax Wanderers unveiled both their 2025 Primary and Alternate kits.

The home kit is a celebration of the passion of the Halifax Wanderers community, featuring sublimated blue smoke, reminiscent of that released from their ‘kitchen’ supporters section on match days.

Their alternate kit is inspired by both the Halifax Regional Municipality and Nova Scotian flags. Both kits are now available for purchase.

Pacific FC unveil ‘The Sky’s The Limit’ alternate kit

Pacific FC revealed their ‘The Sky’s The Limit‘ secondary kit on Thursday.

The kit was inspired by the pathway the club has developed to give local players from the Vancouver Island professional opportunities. For every kit sold during the 2025 season, kit sponsor TELUS will donate one Pacific match ticket to KidSport of Greater Victoria — for a special Kids Takeover Match on Oct. 5, 2025.

The kit is available now at the team’s shop.
