CPLers on loan: Escalante keeps rolling in Honduras, Galán injured in Spain

Seven more days have passed, and five of the CPLers scattered across the world on loan have continued their campaigns, with a couple soaring successes and some bumps in the road.

A few players are very much embedded with their loan clubs by now, having started several matches in a row, and some are still looking to break in.

Most European leagues are hitting their stride at this point, although tightening COVID-19 restrictions in a few countries are forcing some leagues to take brief pauses.

Here’s how the CPL players on loan fared in the past week.

Easton Ongaro (FC Edmonton) — Vendsyssel FF (Denmark)

Ongaro maintained his spot in the starting XI on Sunday, going 72 minutes as Vendsyssel fell 4-1 away to Silkeborg. Although he’s still searching for his first goal in Denmark, Ongaro is making an impression as an imposing striker for the club — Vendsyssel’s match report calls the six-foot-six forward their “Canadian lighthouse.”

Vendsyssel sits ninth in the Danish 1st Division with 10 games played; up next for them will be a return home next Sunday to play Esbjerg.

Michael Petrasso (York9 FC) — Barnet FC (England)

This week wasn’t necessarily as explosive for Petrasso after his two-goal debut in the FA Cup last time out, but he’s starting to settle into the Barnet side. He played 80 minutes in a league match last Tuesday against Wrexham, which ultimately ended 0-0. It sounds like the York9 winger had the best chance of the game for his side, with a good look at goal from the top of the box around the 78th minute, but the shot was saved.

With Barnet’s league contest against Hartlepool (originally set for Tuesday) postponed, the side’s next match will be this Sunday, as they take on League One outfit Burton Albion in the FA Cup.

Nicholas Hamilton (York9 FC) — Dundee FC (Scotland)

The Jamaican striker remained inactive over the weekend for his Scottish Championship club. He’s still searching for a debut, or even to be named to the bench for the first time. He may have a chance this Friday when Dundee take on Alloa Athletic.

Julian Ulbricht (York9 FC) — 1. FC Phönix Lübeck (Germany)

We may have to wait to see more action from York9’s newest striker. With Germany returning to a period of lockdown in November due to COVID-19, Phönix Lübeck have seen at least two games postponed, including a match against LSK Hansa that was set to be played over the weekend.

So, Ulbricht’s side will enter this break sitting seventh in the Regionalliga Nord’s north division.

Emil Gazdov (Pacific FC) — 1. FC Nürnberg (Germany)

For aforementioned reasons, Gazdov will have a while to wait before getting another chance to make his debut with Nürnberg’s U-19s. The four games they had scheduled for November appear to have been postponed.

José Escalante (Cavalry FC) — CDS Vida (Honduras)

This team is apparently on a roll. Escalante’s side has now won five games in a row, including two on the road in the past week, and they’ve shot up to first place in Group A of the Honduran top flight. Escalante himself played 69 minutes of Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Marathón, and it seems he went all 90 minutes on Sunday as Vida battered Real Sociedad, 6-1.

Vida will attempt to keep up the momentum this coming Wednesday as they take on Real España.

José Galán (Valour FC) — CP Villarrobledo (Spain)

A tough one for Galán on Sunday. He started in the middle for Villarrobledo, but the Valour man sadly left the game in the 12th minute due to an injury. The club went on to lose 1-0 to Don Benito.

It’s unclear how serious Galán’s injury is, but hopefully he’ll be able to return soon. His side’s next match will be on Saturday, as they take on Extremadura in search of their first win.

Viti Martínez (Atlético Ottawa) — Alavés B (Spain)

The Alavés reserve side lost 3-0 to Racing de Santander over the weekend, but Ottawa midfielder Viti Martínez was involved from the start. He went 64 minutes in an attacking midfield role, leaving the match with the score still just 1-0.

Up next for Alavés B will be a home game against Club Portugalete next Sunday.
