CPLers on loan: Ongaro debuts in Denmark, Ulbricht scores in Germany

You’re forgiven if you can’t quite keep track of everything going on in this CPL off-season.

Over the past week, we’ve seen a slew of moves announced — most of them either re-signings, or players heading out across the world on loan to stay sharp this winter.

CPL teams have sent players to clubs both big and small, in Europe and Central America. With seasons just beginning in most leagues around the world, a few players have found destinations just in time to make sure they won’t be sitting at home the next few months.

To make it easier for fans of CPL teams to keep track of their players on loan, we at CanPL.ca are here to help, with regular roundups of how everyone’s been doing.

For this first week, since not many players have seen the pitch yet, a little context might help, to help give you an idea of how much various players might be involved at their loan clubs.

Easton Ongaro (FC Edmonton) — Vendsyssel FF (Denmark)

We start with one who actually has played already. Ongaro made his debut for second-tier side Vendsyssel, starting in a Danish Cup match against third-tier Aarhus Fremad. It didn’t go exactly to plan, with Vendsyssel losing 5-0.

Ongaro should be in contention for the team when they return to league play next Sunday against FC Fredericia. Vendsyssel sits ninth out of 12 teams in the league table so far, with two wins and four losses.

Michael Petrasso (York9 FC) — Barnet FC (England)

York9 only announced Petrasso’s loan last Monday, and as a result he hasn’t yet appeared for National League side Barnet FC (that’ll be a theme here). The club has played three games, winning one and losing two. They play on Tuesday afternoon, then again on Saturday; depending on when Petrasso arrived in England, he may be in contention for the weekend.

Nicholas Hamilton (York9 FC) — Dundee FC (Scotland)

Dundee’s league season begins this Friday against Hearts, a match in which York9’s Jamaican striker will likely be available. Hamilton didn’t play in Dundee’s Scottish League Cup win over Brora Rangers on Saturday, but he should be involved going forward.

Julian Ulbricht (York9 FC) — 1. FC Phönix Lübeck (Germany)

This one is going well so far. Just a few days after York9 announced they’d signed the young German, he scored in his debut for Phönix Lübeck:

Ulbricht, 21 years old, started again this past Saturday against his former club, Hamburger SV II. He’ll join the Nine Stripes after spending this season in Germany’s fourth tier.

Emil Gazdov (Pacific FC) — 1. FC Nürnberg (Germany)

Remaining in Germany, the CPL’s youngest keeper is beginning his two-year loan in Bavaria. Gazdov hasn’t played for the club at any level yet, although he is currently listed on Nürnberg’s website as one of three keepers with the U-19 team. So, perhaps that’s the squad to watch if Gazdov is to get playing time in the near future.

José Escalante (Cavalry FC) — CDS Vida (Honduras)

Cavalry’s Honduran winger is on loan in his native country. He hasn’t started for the club yet, but he has been listed on the bench at least twice so far (for a 1-0 loss to Marathón and a 1-1 draw against Honduras Progreso). Vida sit fourth in their five-team group at the moment, with three games played. They’ll attempt to breach the top three to secure a playoff spot.

José Galán (Valour FC) — CP Villarrobledo (Spain)

Valour’s journeyman is back in his home country for a spell, having joined the third-tier Spanish side for this season, which is set to begin this Sunday when they take on UD Melilla. Galán did not feature in the club’s recent friendly ties, with match reports naming him as an incoming player who hadn’t yet joined the squad.

Viti Martínez (Atlético Ottawa) — Alavés B (Spain)

Martínez will be playing in the same league as Galán during his loan, although in a different regional division. The Alavés reserve side begin their Segunda División B season this Sunday as well, when they take on Real Unión. The 23-year-0ld was listed as a significant incoming player for Alavés B on deadline day.
