CPLers on Loan: Ongaro finally finds the net, Escalante begins playoff campaign

We’ve got two weeks’ worth of games to cover this time around, having missed the loan roundup last Monday.

It was a busy period for the CPLers out on loan, as well; Easton Ongaro is really settling into his side in Denmark, José Escalante is beginning a championship campaign in Honduras, and Viti Martínez is helping push his club higher and higher up the table in Spain. Meanwhile, a few players have picked up injuries or are still struggling to get into the squad, and a couple in Germany remain locked down.

Here’s how it all went down the past two weeks for Canadian Premier League players around the world.

Easton Ongaro (FC Edmonton) — Vendsyssel FF (Denmark)

The past few weeks have been tough for Vendsyssel (they’ve lost two in a row, and six of their last seven), but Ongaro has started to hit his stride, at least. Since our last update, Ongaro has played in two games — starting against Esbjerg and playing the second half against Hobro — and he’s scored a goal in both of them.

He potted his first for Vendsyssel in the 76th minute against Esbjerg, equalizing the match before the visitors scored late to win it. Ongaro’s next goal, on Sunday against Hobro, was deep in second-half stoppage time, making no difference with his side down 3-0.

Vendsyssel remain in second-last in the Danish second tier, with their next contest coming this Sunday against Fremad Amager.

Michael Petrasso (York9 FC) — Barnet FC (England)

Petrasso hasn’t suited up for Barnet in the past couple weeks after suffering an injury in the FA Cup against MK Dons, and the club hasn’t won since. In fact, Barnet fired their manager on Sunday after a 6-0 loss to Chesterfield over the weekend, with the club now sitting 20th in the National League (just one point clear of the relegation zone).

Up next for Barnet is an FA Trophy contest next weekend against an opponent still to be determined.

Nicholas Hamilton (York9 FC) — Dundee FC (Scotland)

Hamilton did not appear in either of Dundee’s last two games against Arbroath and Inverness, meaning he’s still just got one appearance (and a brief one at that). They’ll take on Dunfermline Athletic this coming weekend.

Julian Ulbricht (York9 FC) — 1. FC Phönix Lübeck (Germany)

German lower-league football remains locked down, and Ulbricht’s club has been resorting to virtual training sessions over Zoom. It’ll be another few weeks before they’re allowed to return to the football pitch.

Emil Gazdov (Pacific FC) — 1. FC Nürnberg (Germany)

The same remains true for Gazdov and Nürnberg; the academy sides of the club are not able to compete in league play until early 2021.

José Escalante (Cavalry FC) — CDS Vida (Honduras)

It’s playoff season in Honduras, and Escalante’s Vida are participating. His side ended up second in Group B of the Honduran national league, meaning they’ll now face a two-legged tie against Lobos UPNFM on the road to the Grand Final for this Apertura season.

Vida actually played Lobos this past weekend, losing 3-0. Escalante himself seems to have picked up an injury a week ago, but he’ll hopefully be available for the crucial playoff matchup.

Viti Martínez (Atlético Ottawa) — Alavés B (Spain)

It was a big week for Alavés, who emerged from a short break with a 3-0 win over Laredo. Martínez played all 90 minutes in central midfield, picking up a yellow card but otherwise doing well to help his team secure a massive victory.

Martínez and Alavés, now in second place in their division, will now move on to play Barakaldo CF next Sunday.
