On Thursday, the sixty-player preliminary rosters were revealed by all of the national teams competing in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup later this month. The 17th edition of the tournament, which Canada won for the first and only time in 2000, will begin on June 16, ending exactly one month later as the region’s best national team is crowned at SoFi Stadium in the Los Angeles suburbs.
The Gold Cup Prelims will take place between June 16-20, at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The 12 participating teams were divided into six pairings, with the six-match winners advancing to Round Two. The three Round Two winners will advance to the 2023 Gold Cup Group Stage. Canada has already qualified for the group stage, and will hold their first group stage match against one of the preliminary round teams at BMO Field in Toronto on June 27.
Included among the Canadian squad are six former Canadian Premier League players: Victor Loturi (formerly of Cavalry FC, now with Ross County), Dominick Zator (Cavalry FC and York United, now with Korona Kielce), Lukas MacNaughton (Pacific FC, now with Nashville SC), Joel Waterman (Cavalry FC, now with CF Montréal), Sean Rea and Jonathan Sirois (both formerly on loan at Valour FC from current team CF Montréal).
The usual cast of characters that Canadian fans expect to see on the roster are there again as well, including Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David, Tajon Buchanan, Atiba Hutchinson, Milan Borjan, Stephen Eustaquio.
Some interesting dual-nationals are also part of the 60-man roster, including an American-born quartet: centre-back Zac McGraw, midfielders Aidan Morris and Brandon Cambridge, and winger Luca Koleosho. English striker Daniel Jebbison is also in the squad, as is goalkeeper Tom McGill — who was born in Canada but represented England at the youth international level. By making the final Gold Cup squad, players are automatically cap-tied, so who makes the final 23 could be an interesting look at the future of the Canadian men’s national team.
The full Canadian roster, as well as the full rosters of every team competing, are available here.
There are a handful of current CPL players named to the preliminary squads of other nations as well, with Marcus Simmons (Vancouver FC) and Jonathan Grant (York United) both named to the Guyana roster. Andrew Jean-Baptiste (Valour FC) and Garven Metusala (Forge FC) have been named to the Haiti team as well, with Andre Rampersad (Halifax Wanderers FC), Luke Singh (Atlético Ottawa) and Malcolm Shaw (Atlético Ottawa) all part of the Trinidad and Tobago roster.
Former CPL players Quillan Roberts and Emery Welshman (both Forge FC) are also part of the Guyana setup, and Ryan Telfer (York United and Atlético Ottawa) and Kareem Moses (FC Edmonton) are with the Trinidad squad.
