Darren O’Dea on One Soccer Hangout: York9 FC deal never came to fruition

Tuesday’s OneSoccer Player & Pundit Hangout session featured former Toronto FC captain Darren O’Dea.

Currently a youth team coach with Scottish giants Celtic FC, O’Dea is a former Irish international who earned 20 caps for his country from 2009 to 2013.

Canadian soccer fans best remember the former defender from his time with Toronto FC from 2012 to 2013.

O’Dea also featured for Celtic, Metalurh Donetsk in Ukraine, Ipswich Town (where he played under coach Roy Keane), Mumbai City FC, Blackpool and a host of other clubs during his playing career before taking up a coaching position with Scottish side Motherwell in 2019.

In talking to OneSoccer hosts Kurt Larson, Oliver Platt and Asa Rehman, O’Dea revealed that he did consider a move to play in the Canadian Premier League before hanging up his cleats, but that a deal with York9 FC never materialized.

“I spoke to (Y9 coach) Jimmy Brennan… this was when they were coming into their first season. That wasn’t something that was close to getting done, but it was a conversation that was had,” O’Dea revealed.
