Forge FC captain Kyle Bekker named CanPL.ca Player of the Week

Forge FC skipper Kyle Bekker was named CanPL.ca’s Player of the Week on Friday for the round of matches beginning Saturday, September 25.

Bekker started both of Forge’s games in this stretch, playing all 90 in a key league win on Saturday against Pacific FC before captaining his side through a tumultuous and intense Concacaf League affair on Tuesday against C.A. Independiente in Panama.

Ever a resolute presence in the centre of midfield, Bekker was a major factor in Forge’s big week. After a strong night at home in a free-roaming role against Pacific, he went on to help steer 10-man Forge to victory in Panama, scoring their second goal with a spectacular free kick from distance to secure their advancement to the quarterfinals.

Bekker, being the reigning CPL Player of the Year from 2020 as well as the captain of the back-to-back champions, is putting together another strong season for Forge, with a team-high 1,529 minutes in league play so far plus strong performances in both the Canadian Championship and Concacaf League.

This is the second time Bekker has been named Player of the Week this season, making him the first CPLer to earn the nod twice. This is the third time a Forge player has won in 2021, with Kwame Awuah having been given the honour on August 27.
