Four CPLers called up for Canada U-20 camp in Chile

On Friday, Canada Soccer announced the 22 players that have been called up to the U-20 national team for a trio of friendlies this month in La Calera, Chile.

Starting on Wednesday, June 19, Canada take on Chile, followed by Ecuador (Friday, June 21) and Paraguay (Sunday, June 23). The group, coached by Andrew Olivieri are preparing for the 2024 Concacaf U-20 Championship, which kicks off on July 19 in Mexico.

Canada’s roster for the camp features four Canadian Premier League players: Pacific FC fullback Christian Greco-Taylor, Vancouver FC fullback James Cameron, Forge midfielder Khadim Kane and Halifax Wanderers forward Tavio Ciccarelli.

This squad also includes several new faces from the group that played at the 2024 Concacaf U-20 Championship qualifiers in Trinidad and Tobago in February.

Kane, as well as Vancouver Whitecaps 2 central defender Immanuel Mathe, Toronto FC’s Andrei Dumitru and Richard Chukwu, NK Istra’s Jovan Ivanisevic, Puskas Akademia’s Luka Juricic, Jorge Wilstermann’s Adrian Pacheco and Portland Timbers II attacker Mataeo Bunbury are all new to the group.

Forge FC pair Matteo Schiavoni and Kevaughn Tavernier are not in the squad after playing in the Concacaf U-20 qualifying tournament. CF Montréal’s Alessandro Biello and Colorado Rapid’s Kimani Stewart-Baynes, meanwhile, were unavailable due to club duties, while Luc De Fougerolles is in camp with the senior team.

Perhaps the number of new players will allow Oliveiri to get a bit of a wider look at his talent pool before making his first selections for the 2024 U-20 Concacaf Championship tournament next month.
