Gatorade Team of the Week (Week 9)

The Gatorade Team of the Week for the ninth week of Canadian Premier League action in 2023, brought to you by Kristian Jack and OneSoccer’s Oliver Platt.

CPL Team of the Week — Week 9

Goalkeeper

Kieran Baskett (Pacific FC)

In a top-of-the-table clash on Saturday night, Baskett kept a clean sheet for Pacific, as they blanked Forge 1-0. Accurate with his distribution, the youngster was calm and composed between the sticks and looks to have won the net on the Island for the time being.

Defenders

Jonathan Grant (York United)

Grant’s cross in the 24th minute on Friday led to a crucial equalizer for York United off the head of Atlético Ottawa defender Luke Singh. It was one of five crosses that Grant would play on Friday evening as he was a solid outlet for York down the right flank, also playing 24 passes in the final third.

Thomas Meilleur-Giguère (Pacific FC)

Meilleur-Giguère was remarkably composed against one of the best teams in the league, completing all 30 of his pass attempts on Saturday evening. The central defender also made two tackles, and eight clearances as Pacific held Forge to just a single shot on target at Tim Hortons Field on Saturday.

Tass Mourdoukoutas (York United)

Mourdoukoutas was immense both in possession and out of it on Friday evening. He completed 62 of his 67 attempted passes, while winning possession five times and making seven clearances at the back.

Cale Loughrey (Halifax Wanderers)

Loughrey was a key part of an outstanding defensive effort from Halifax, as they earned their second clean sheet, and first win, of 2023. The 21-year-old won all four of his duels, including three in the air, and made seven clearances on Saturday afternoon.

Midfielders

Callum Watson (Halifax Wanderers)

Watson became the first CPL player to score multiple goals in a match this season (something Myer Bevan would equal later in the weekend) as his two goals led to Halifax’s first win of the season. The young midfielder had five total shot attempts, including four inside the box, and won the ball twice in the final third during an exceptional performance.

Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé (York United)

The York midfielder pulled the strings all night long in midfield on Friday. He set up the winning goal on a brilliant corner headed home by Osaze De Rosario, and created three other chances on a stunning 91 attempted passes, 29 of which came in the final third. He also won possession nine times, including twice in the final third and made two interceptions.

Adonijah Reid (Pacific FC)

Reid is becoming a fixture in the CPL team of the week, as he makes his third straight appearance after an excellent performance in Hamilton on Saturday. He had four shot attempts, created two chances, made two interceptions and won three fouls during a hardworking and complete performance.

Aidan Daniels (Halifax Wanderers)

Daniels created Halifax’s opening goal with a brilliant run down the right flank, and ball across goal to Watson, as the highlight of a match where he was the Wanderers’ main offensive threat. Daniels created two chances, had six successful dribbles and won ten of his 15 duels.

Goteh Ntignee (Cavalry FC)

Ntignee was an absolute force down the left all match for Cavalry on both sides of the ball. Offensively, he had an assist, showing some brilliant composure and dribbling to find Myer Bevan alone in the box, as well as creating two chances and completing three dribbles. He also won seven of 13 contested duels and was fouled three times.

Forwards

Myer Bevan (Cavalry FC)

With a pair of goals inside the first 21 minutes on Sunday against Vancouver, Myer Bevan is now the league’s Golden Boot co-leader with Vancouver FC’s Shaan Hundal. The New Zealand International is thriving as his side’s number nine and is proving to be one of the most goal-dangerous players in the Canadian Premier League this season.
