Herdman names CanMNT squad for World Cup Qualifying matches vs. Honduras, USA, El Salvador

Canada Soccer revealed on Monday afternoon the men’s national team roster that will participate in the upcoming round of FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Honduras, the United States, and El Salvador.

Coach John Herdman has named a squad of 25 players for this fourth window of Concacaf’s Octagonal round, as Canada look to take another step toward booking their ticket to Qatar 2022. Most of the key contributors from previous windows are back with the team, including Lille striker Jonathan David, Besiktas stars Cyle Larin and Atiba Hutchinson, and newly-signed Nottingham Forest fullback Richie Laryea.

There are a few notable absences, though; as had previously been announced, Bayern Munich fullback Alphonso Davies will miss this window as he recovers from a mild case of myocarditis.

After eight games so far in this final round of Concacaf World Cup Qualifying — the midway point of the eight-team competition — Canada sits in first place, one point ahead of the United States. They climbed to the top of the Octagon in November, when they defeated both Costa Rica and Mexico at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium. They will be looking to maintain their spot in the top three — that is, the automatic qualification places to the World Cup — in this window.

Canada begin the week this Thursday, January 27 when they travel to San Pedro Sula to take on Honduras (8:05 pm ET). Next, they’ll be at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, Ontario — home of the CPL’s Forge FC — on Sunday, January 30 to host the United States (3:05 pm ET), before they head back to Central America for an away date against El Salvador on Wednesday, February 2 (9:00 pm ET).

All three games will be broadcast live on OneSoccer and Sportsnet.
