HFX Wanderers sign striker Mamadi Camara for rest of 2021 season

HFX Wanderers have signed Guinean-Canadian striker Mamadi Camara to a short-term contract for the remainder of the 2021 CanPL season.

The 26-year-old Montreal native, who has a club option for 2022, has come off an impressive season in PLSQ, scoring 11 goals in his past eight games with Celtix Du Haut-Richelieu.

“We felt we needed to add another attacking option as we head into the second half of the season,” said head coach Stephen Hart. “Mamadi is a player we’ve been aware of for a number of years. He has been in good form recently and someone we felt could contribute immediately to the squad in the final third of the pitch.”

Camara is a former Simon Fraser University team-mate of Wanderers midfielder Marcello Polisi, where he scored 29 goals in 69 appearances. He was also named the GNAC first team all-star in each of his four seasons (2015-2018) before being named GNAC player of the year in his final year.

In 2019, Camara was selected 46th overall by San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS SuperDraft before spending the abbreviated 2020 season at USL club Colorado Switchbacks, where he was coached by FC Edmonton coach Alan Koch.

He was also coached by Cavalry FC gaffer Tommy Wheeldon Jr. while with USL League 2 side Calgary Foothills in 2018.
