OneSoccer Hangout: Can Canada get out of the group at the Concacaf Gold Cup?

OneSoccer host Adam Jenkins was joined by former Canadian international Iain Hume, and commentators Oliver Platt and Gareth Wheeler on Tuesday morning to discuss Canada’s group-stage draw for the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup.

The official draw for next summer’s Gold Cup took place in Miami on Monday evening, with Canada being selected to play in a first-round group with the United States, Martinique, and one of Haiti, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Bermuda, or Barbados.

Everybody on the panel opined that Canada was fortunate to avoid Mexico in the group stage, while at the same time welcoming the prospect of a tough match against the U.S.

Canada beat the U.S. 2-0 last October in Concacaf Nations League action, but then suffered a 4-1 loss to the Americans in Orlando the following month.

“In 2019, Canada showed how good they can be, but in the reverse leg showed how poor they can be… … you could be playing a dog and a duck, or the U.S. and Mexico; you’ve got to win two games (in the Gold Cup group stage),” Hume offered.

The panel also discussed how Canadian coach John Herdman will have to prioritize World Cup qualifying next summer over the Gold Cup when it comes to selecting his roster.
