Pacific FC announce return of first-ever signing Kadin Chung

Pacific FC announced on Wednesday that the club’s first-ever player is returning to Vancouver Island, as they agreed to a deal with full-back Kadin Chung through 2026.

The 26-year-old from Port Coquitlam, B.C. left Pacific following their 2021 CPL Final victory over Forge FC to join Toronto FC. After one season in Major League Soccer, including a Canadian Championship final victory over that very same Forge FC team, Chung returned to the Canadian Premier League to join Vancouver FC.

Over the past two seasons with Pacific’s B.C. rivals, Chung made 38 appearances, limited largely by a fractured collarbone he suffered in just the fifth game of Vancouver FC’s inaugural season. He played largely as a central midfielder during his first season in Langley, before moving back to his natural right-back position this past campaign.

“Kadin is one of the most well-rounded defenders we have in the country,” said Pacific FC head coach James Merriman. “He’s comfortable in build-up play, he’s very effective attacking wide areas or coming inside. He’s strong in one-on-one situations defensively and deceptively quick in his recovery runs. He’s a top talent at this level and we believe he is capable of even more.”

Chung initially signed with the Tridents in November of 2018, playing for the club in their first three Canadian Premier League seasons. During that time he amassed 63 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice and adding five assists.

With Kunle Dada-Luke out of contract and his future uncertain, Chung could provide an elite-level replacement down the right side. A solid one-v-one defender, he won 58.33 per cent of his duels this past season. Technically adept and good on the ball, he will be an asset for a Tridents team that struggled to build out from the back this season, with the lowest pass accuracy in the league in their own half (88.13 per cent) and second-lowest possession at 47.12.

Chung is one of eight players who have played for both of the Canadian Premier League’s B.C. clubs, a list that also includes Vancouver FC captain Callum Irving, David Norman Jr., Zach Verhoven, Ben Fisk, Alejandro Díaz, Ayman Sellouf and Moses Dyer.

Above all, Chung is a player fully aware of the standard it takes to not only win in this league, but also for this club. For a Pacific team that has struggled to return to the heights of 2021 since he left — with 2024 being their lowest finish in the table since 2019, plus a loss in the 4th vs. 5th match of the playoffs — his return is a welcome boost.

“Kadin returns to Pacific hungry with ambition to win and he still has the drive to push to that next level,” said Merriman. “We look forward to welcoming Kadin back to the club and know very well what he brings on and off the field.”
