Cavalry FC remained perfect in the league and against their Al Classico rivals with an empathic 3-0 win against FC Edmonton at Clarke Stadium on Saturday.

The win – the biggest of Cavalry’s Spring season – extends the league-leaders’ undefeated run to six CPL matches.

The Eddies had the best of Cavalry through the first half, outshooting the visitors 13-3. Oumar Diouck, who took an extra touch while open in front of the six-yard box, had the best of the Eddies’ early chances, but couldn’t finish in front of goal. Cavalry stabilized themselves late in the half after changing shape, replacing midfielder Julian Buscher for centreback Dominick Zator.

In the 66th minute, the Cavs had their breakthrough. Dom Malonga smartly found Sergio Camargo on a slicing run, with the attacking midfielder tucking away the game’s first marker past a defender and goalkeeper Connor James.

Camargo completed his brace in the 73rd minute after he was left unmarked by a disorganized Eddies backline. The attacking midfielder smashed home his second after a play started by a long throw-in, then bounced around by four other Cavalry players in and around the box. The Cavs weren’t done there.

Nico Pasquotti made it three for Cavalry five minutes later in the 77th minute, after following up on his powerful shot into James and then tapping home his second goal in league play.

The Cavs will stay on the road, heading out east to take on HFX Wanderers FC (6:00 p.m. ET, 7:00 p.m. AT, on OneSoccer). Meanwhile, FCE go down to Ontario for yet another meeting with York9 FC at York Lions Stadium (7:00 p.m. ET, on OneSoccer).

Three key performers

Sergio Camargo (Cavalry FC)

Cavalry’s Camargo was at the right place at the right time… twice. The attacking midfielder showcased his vision and positioning for both of his goals — a nicely-timed run and finding loads of space at the back post. A well-earned brace.

Ameer Didic (FC Edmonton)

FC Edmonton’s towering centreback had a strong return from injury, playing 90 minutes. Didic, while let down by fellow defenders on those three goals, was effective for most of the match at the centre of defence, making 11 clearances.

Elijah Adekugbe (Cavalry FC)

Cavalry’s midfield workhorse was key to keeping the Eddies at bay, controlling play and defending well. Adekugbe held possession well in the second half as Cavalry took hold, recording a 93% passing accuracy on route to victory.
