HIGHLIGHTS: Bizarre York9 goal splits points at FC Edmonton

An unusual goal saw honours split between York9 and FC Edmonton Sunday with the match ending 2-2 at Clarke Stadium.

FC Edmonton’s Oumar Diouck got the match off to a flying start in the 4th minute after a lovely Ajeej Sarkaria flick-on sent the Belgian winger in on goal. Diouck placed his shot to grab his sixth marker of the season.

York9 would equalize soon after. A penalty call against Eddies defender Amer Didic sent Kyle Porter to the spot. Connor James saved the attempt, but the rebound fell to Wataru Murofushi, who smashed home his first goal for York9. FCE continued the flurry of chances soon after when a Sarkaria goal was controversially called offside.

Switching to the second half, the next big chance came for FCE’s Randy Edwini-Bonsu in the 69th minute; the winger cut in on his defender and smacked a chance off Nathan Ingham’s ball for a corner. The Eddies would convert on the ensuing set-piece via Easton Ongaro, who slid the ball past Ingham from a tight near-post angle to score in his sixth goal in as many matches.

However, York9 would equalize once again in the 84th minute, when a looping cross into a crowded box from Ryan Telfer harmlessly bounced through the crowd and into the back of the net, leaving Edmonton ‘keeper James shaking his head.

Next up for York9 is a new installment of the 905 Derby as they visit the Hammer on September 8 to play Forge FC (1:00 p.m. ET, on OneSoccer). FCE will head out on the road as well, with their next match a Labour Day tilt against HFX Wanderers FC on September 2 (1:00 p.m. ET, 2:00 p.m. AT, on OneSoccer).

Three Key Performers

Ajeej Sarkaria (FC Edmonton)

Clever piece of skill to set up Diouck early, the former Calgary Foothills forward returned to the side in style after an injury layoff. He could have easily scored after, as well.

Easton Ongaro (FC Edmonton)

FC Edmonton’s big centre-forward continues to be a lot to handle for CPL sides. A well-taken goal, finding space underneath, and giving Y9’s backline major issues over 90 minutes.

Ryan Telfer (York9 FC)

Flukey goal notwithstanding, Ryan Telfer has an effective day out at Clarke. Making three key passes, a handful of tricky plays, and a couple decent crosses, Telfer deserved his late equalizer.
