FC Edmonton’s Easton Ongaro continued his goalscoring streak with a brace on Saturday, sending the Eddies past Pacific FC 3-1 at Clarke Stadium and putting them joint-top of the CPL’s Fall season on 11 points.
Back-to-back goals capped off a hotly-contested first 30 minutes, starting in the 31st minute and FCE’s Oumar Diouck. The Belgian striker went unmarked at the back post, volleying a right-footed effort beautifully to take the lead. PFC answered back less than a minute later, when a Noah Verhoeven freekick landed to Ben Fisk, again unmarked, less than a yard from the far post.
Diouck and fellow Eddies attacker Tomi Ameobi troubled Pacific FC’s backline in open play through the first half, getting in behind and threatening on several occasions.
Not to be forgotten as Edmonton’s in-form forward, Ongaro’s time would come just after halftime. The young lumbering striker kept his goal-scoring streak alive in the 47th minute, poking home a rebound for a go-ahead marker.
Ongaro wasn’t done there, though, coming through again in the 66th minute, bundling home a second goal of the game, and his fourth in three matches, giving the Eddies a two-goal advantage.
Michael Silberbauer and Pacific were unable to find a way back, as the Eddies kept the pressure on and threatened to score several times before full time.
Both sides will return to action this weekend. The Eddies have an Al Classico tilt with their Alberta neighbours Cavalry FC at Spruce Meadows on Friday, August 16 (9:00 p.m. ET, 7:00 p.m. MT, on OneSoccer), and Pacific will head to the GTA for a game with York9 FC on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET, on OneSoccer).

Three Key Performers
Oumar Diouck (FC Edmonton)
FCE’s buzzing bee of a Belgian had quite the run-out at Clarke Stadium. A beautifully-taken goal, hard-to-deal-with runs and tricky skills proved an at times uncontrollable element for the home side.
Easton Ongaro (FC Edmonton)
Ongaro is on fire. Scoring twice and nearly snatching another, firing a blistering six shots on target and grabbing an assist on Diouck’s opener sees his run of form continue in dramatic fashion.
Alex Gonzalez (Pacific FC)
Pacific FC’s defensive midfield anchor was a decent connecting piece. A match-leading 77 passes and 85 touches, Gonzalez was part of a PFC midfield that didn’t play as poorly as the scoreline suggests.
