Sandor: Three Fr. Guiana players to watch in Nations League

Two years ago, Canada beat French Guiana 4-2 at the Gold Cup. But, since that time, French Guianese coach Thierry De Neef has revamped his side. When he announced his roster for the March 24 Nations League match against Canada at BC Place (6 p.m. ET, TSN2/RDS), only three players who started in that Gold Cup match from 2017 remained.

If you’re looking to win a trivia contest of obscure CONCACAF knowledge, the three survivors are Kevin Rimane, fullback Jean-David Legrand and attacker Rhudy Evens.

So, even though the two sides faced each other fairly recently, there is a lot of mystery to the South American side (that plays in CONCACAF).

Here’s what we know: French Guiana has won two of three Nations League matches, and are definitely in the hunt to qualify for the Gold Cup. The most recent result of note was a 2-1 win over neighbouring Guyana.

Spots in the Gold Cup go the top 10 teams in Nations League qualifying. French Guiana currently sits 12th. Getting to Group A of the Nations League is a bit of a bigger ask, as it would require French Guiana to beat Canada at BC Place by a sizeable scoreline — and get help. Six teams, including Canada, are perfect through the first three rounds. French Guiana would need one of the undefeated/untied countries with a worse goal differential to slip up, like Martinique or Cuba.

Should Canadians feel confident? Yes.

However, nothing is a given in CONCACAF.

The opposition will have logged the miles to get here. The team is flying from South America to Paris, then from Paris to Vancouver. That’s three continents worth of travel. That’s 7,086 km from Cayenne to Paris, then another 7,916 km from Paris to Vancouver.

Three players to watch:

Kevin Rimane

Rimane played in midfield when French Guiana played Canada in 2017. He’s easily the most accomplished player on the French Guiana roster; he’s currently playing regular minutes as a defender with Croatian first-division side, NK Istra. He was loaned to Istra in January by his parent club, Paris St-Germain. Rimane has been a depth player at PSG who rarely gets into games, but, heck, you’ve got to be pretty decent just to be a squad guy at Parc des Princes. Rimane, made 26 successful passes out of 28 attempts in the win over Guyana. So, whether he’s in the back or in the midfield, he’s a ball-mover.

Jules Haabo

Haabo got both goals in the win over Guyana. His first came off a nifty turn with the ball at his feet. The second saw him chase down a ball that was bouncing awkwardly on a pitch that looked to be as hard as a rock, and he deftly volleyed it home while on the run. A CONCACAF pitch in rough shape — that never happens. He’s just signed with lower-tier Spanish side, Jerez. Don’t take my word for it. Check out his goals from the CONCACAF highlight package.

Josue Albert

Albert is a centre-back, born in France, who is relatively new to the French Guianese national side. He plays in the French second division for Clermont Foot, where he has started four of the previous five matches. While he does not have much of a playing record for French Guiana, the fact that he’s playing his club football at a good level in France tells you that he will have some quality.
