Toronto, ON – (June 21, 2022) – A statement from the Canadian Premier League and its member clubs on National Indigenous Peoples Day:
“On National Indigenous Peoples Day, the Canadian Premier League and its member clubs are united in recognizing and celebrating our First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities from coast to coast. We are reflecting on the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools and acknowledging that more work needs to be done to achieve reconciliation.
Guided by the five sport-related calls to action outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Final Report in 2015, we are committed to listening, learning and advocating for more accessible and equitable sport, physical activity and recreational opportunities for Indigenous people.”
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Final Report was released with 94 calls to action. Five of those calls to action, No. 87 to No. 91, addressed reconciliation tied to sport. Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Final Report here.
