Valour FC centre-back Andrew Jean-Baptiste has been named CanPL.ca’s first Player of the Week for the 2021 CPL season.
The 29-year-old Haitian international was immense in back-to-back 2-0 wins over 2020 CPL Final contestants Forge FC and HFX Wanderers FC, scoring a header in the latter win on Wednesday.
Jean-Baptiste, paired with newly-converted wide player Stefan Cebara in the centre of defence, led his side with a staggering 15 clearances through their first two matches while, most importantly, marshalling his undermanned underdog side to consecutive clean sheets – the only CPL club to do so at The Kickoff in Winnipeg.
Jean-Baptiste, who wore the captain’s armband Wednesday vs. Halifax, joined Valour ahead of the 2020 campaign and made six appearances at the Island Games, scoring a goal and adding an assist.
