Soccer fans are now able to look back at the first Al Classico in Canadian Premier League history with the release of a brand new “Forever First” video.

“Forever First: First Al Classico” was posted to the CPL’s YouTube and IGTV channels on Friday for all Canadian soccer supporters to watch.

If you weren’t among the crowd at ATCO Field on May 18, 2019, you have a chance to relive the game as Cavalry FC earned a 1-0 win over FC Edmonton in the first CPL derby between the provincial rivals.

Cavalry rolled its CPL win-streak to four victories in a row, courtesy of Cavs striker Jordan Brown scoring the only goal of the game on a rainy afternoon at Spruce Meadows.

Brown’s fortuitous effort beat Eddies goalkeeper Connor James in the 45th minute of play, with the English striker sticking out his left foot to redirect a shot by teammate Elijah Adekugbe.

“I was always ready for it,” Brown told CanPL.ca after the match, affirming that he fully intended to place the ball where he did.

“I just reacted. It was like my first goal in the first game, I just reacted.”

Intentional or not, it proved the difference between these two outfits as the Calgary-based Cavs got the better of Edmonton in the Battle of Alberta.

Eddies forward Marcus Velado-Tsegaye tested Cavalry goalkeeper Marco Carducci on a number of occasions in the second half. But, coupled with other shots peppered at his goal, Carducci stood firm between the sticks, denying his opponents with a series of game-changing saves.

“I actually saw it early and it helped me make the save,” Carducci said of one his saves on Velado-Tsegaye.

“To give myself credit, I move my feet quite well… As much as you can, you want to not commit too early.”

Edmonton ramped up the pressure throughout the second half as the game turned into a physical battle – the two teams combined for 30 fouls over 90 minutest.

The introduction of Oumar Diouck to the fold gave Edmonton even more of the attacking imputes late in the match, but he and his teammates couldn’t break down Cavalry’s defensive line by the time the ref blew the final whistle.

For the Cavalry, it was their fourth one-goal victory in a row in league play.

“We find different ways to win football matches,” Cavs coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. offered after the game.

“When you play the likes of FC Edmonton, they’ve got great history as a professional club, we knew as soon as it was a one-goal game that they were going to come back into it.

“I’d love to play champagne football all the time, but I’ll settle for a couple of beers and three points.”
