York United clinch spot in the 2024 Canadian Premier League playoffs, Ottawa and Cavalry clinch home playoff match

York United have clinched their spot in the 2024 Canadian Premier League Playoffs, after several results around the league went in their favour despite losing to Forge FC on Saturday.

With Vancouver FC drawing in Calgary on Saturday, Halifax Wanderers FC drawing in Ottawa on Sunday, and Valour FC beating Pacific FC on Monday night, York can no longer finish outside the top five. It will be a third playoff appearance in club history for the Nine Stripes, who reached the postseason for the first time in 2021, when they were eliminated in the semifinals by Forge. Last year they finished fifth, and lost in the four vs. five game in the first playoff round, on a stoppage time goal away to Pacific FC.

The results around the league this weekend also saw Atlético Ottawa and Cavalry FC confirm their places in the top four in the table, guaranteeing that they will each host a playoff game. York have not yet confirmed that they will host a playoff match yet, but have a commanding lead on fourth place with three matches remaining in the regular season.

Four teams have now clinched playoff spots: Forge FC, Atlético Ottawa, Cavalry FC and York United FC. Forge FC can clinch the CPL Shield as the league’s regular season winners next weekend, if they are able to beat Valour FC in Winnipeg.

The top five teams at the end of the regular season will advance to the playoffs, which will be contested in the same format as was introduced by the CPL last year. The 2024 CPL Playoffs will kick off on Wednesday, Oct. 23 and run through Saturday, Nov. 9 or Sunday, Nov. 10, depending on which club hosts the 2024 CPL Final.
