York United sign Mexican forward Jorge Guzmán on loan from Atlas

York United FC announced on Friday the signing of Mexican attacker Jorge Guzmán on loan for the remainder of the 2024 season.

The 20-year-old joins from heavyweight Liga MX side Atlas Fútbol Club and reconnects with a familiar face.

It was July 2023 when the left-sided forward was handed a very first start in his professional career in a Leagues Cup outing at Yankee Stadium against MLS outfit New York City FC. His coach on that occasion? Current Nine Stripes boss Benjamín Mora. The following week, Guzmán starred again in the 1-0 home win over Toronto FC.

In total, Guzman has gone on to make 25 senior appearances for the club, including over 20 in Liga MX, and now joins compatriots Oswaldo Leon, Josué Martínez and Orlando Botello at York Lions Stadium.

A native of Puerto Vallarta, Guzmán joined the Atlas academy in 2018 and boasts plenty of elite experience despite his tender years. It’s one of the reasons Mora is so excited to bring him to the Canadian Premier League.

“He’s a very, very talented young player,” Mora says.

“He’s played with me before so I know his virtues, his capacities. If everything goes well, he’ll be helping York United gain points and be important to the development and functionality of the team.

“His most valuable position is left winger, but he can play as a wing-back or as an eight and I’ve even played him as a second striker with mobility. He’s very fast and agile and perceptive of space and time. So, he can make a difference.”
