HIGHLIGHTS: Late Campbell equalizer earns Pacific FC a point in 1-1 draw with Atlético Ottawa

Terran Campbell was the hero for Pacific FC in their 1-1 draw against Atlético Ottawa on Sunday afternoon, scoring an 86th minute equalizer to rescue a point for his side.

After a fast start to the match that saw both sides test the opposing goalkeepers, it was Atlético Ottawa who struck first in the 19th minute. Picking up a low pass into the box from Shawn-Claud Lawson, Alberto Soto broke through the Pacific backline. He took a couple of touches before sliding the ball across the face of goal to Brian Wright, who easily tapped the ball home from a few yards out.

Dylon Powley made two impressive reaction saves at the end of the first half to deny a pair of Pacific FC goalscoring opportunities. Matteo Polisi’s shot on goal with his first touch was held on to by Powley, while the Ottawa goalkeeper also dived to his left to deny a shot from Sean Young moments later.

Powley made three saves in total in the first half, with the players in front of him blocking two more chances.

Victor Blasco was the most lively of the Pacific players in the first half, taking four shots — one of which went on target — and completing all of his nine passes. He was a threat down the left flank, as was Kunle Dada-Luke on the right, but Ottawa took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Pacific came flying out of the gate in the second half, with a sense of urgency that they’d maintain for most of the half.

Moments after the half began, Blasco was again denied by the Ottawa goalkeeper, and The Tridents again came close a few minutes later — left unmarked at the back post as a corner came into the box, Lukas MacNaughton headed the ball over the crossbar from a few yards out.

It seemed as though Atlético Ottawa were going to take all three points in an upset victory on the road, but were unable to hold off the sustained pressure from The Tridents. The visitors were finally broke down in the 86th minute, as a cross into the box from Jordan Haynes was met in the air by Terran Campbell.

The second-half substitute rose above everyone to head home the equalizing goal, and earn his side a point.

Sunday’s match also marked the official renaming of Starlight Stadium. Formerly known as Westhills Stadium, the stadium was renamed Starlight Stadium earlier this year, but officials from Starlight Investments in Toronto were yet to make it out to a match — which they did on Sunday.

With the draw, Atlético Ottawa remain at the bottom of the table, but move within four points of FC Edmonton in seventh place. Pacific also remain at the top of the table, going five points clear of Cavalry FC in first place.
