FC Edmonton signs Congolese fullback Sharly Mabussi

FC Edmonton announced on Thursday that it has signed Congolese fullback Sharly Mabussi to a contract for the 2021 Canadian Premier League season.

Mabussi, 23, has made 29 appearances in the French footballing pyramid, including six appearances in Ligue 2 – France’s second tier – with Stade Laval in 2016-17.

He went on to make 27 appearances for the club, including in major cup competitions such as the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue. Most recently, he played for Bergerac Périgord FC of National 2, France’s fourth tier.

Mabussi, who was born and raised in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is an attacking and aggressive left fullback who likes to get on the ball, according to new FC Edmonton coach Alan Koch.

“Sharly is an exciting and athletic fullback,” Koch said in a media release. “He has had excellent experiences already for a younger player, and we are excited to work with him to kick start his career again.

“He has a big upside and we look forward to working with him to maximize his abilities. We expect him to come in and compete for playing time immediately.”

Mabussi joins 11 other Eddies players confirmed for the 2021 CPL season, including fellow newcomers Fraser Aird, Kyle Porter, Shamit Shome, and Paris Gee.
