HIGHLIGHTS: Cavalry FC, Pacific FC play out scoreless top-of-the-table clash

Pacific FC and Cavalry FC’s top-of-the-table tilt Wednesday was far from a clash of titans, with both sides seeing out a scoreless draw at ATCO Field at Spruce Meadows.

Cavalry (second place, 21 pts) and the Tridents (first place, 22 pts) split the spoils and remained no. one and no. two atop the 2021 Canadian Premier League standings with the result.

Pacific took hold of possession in the match’s early stages, something that seemed by design by both teams. Cavalry – sporting a sizeable back three of Daan Klomp, David Norman Jr., and Karifa Yao – looked poised to see the match come to them as midfielders Nik Ledgerwood and Eillot Simmons were to hold firm.

The Tridents spent much of the first half prodding. Terran Campbell sent the first chance of the match off the post – a near-side one-hit that offered just a slimmer of goal. A second chance came off the scraps but trickled through the box. It was the start of a promising run of play for PFC who firmly took the invitation to attack the Foot Soldiers end.

Cavalry looked dangerous in the proceeding 10 minutes, taking up space in, around, and behind Pacific’s backline. A Jose Hernandez soft touch to the back post was their lone shot on target in the half – or for either team.

Second half proceedings started with much more urgency. The Tridents enjoyed early pressure, leaving coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. looking to his unusually short four-outfield player bench.

The Tridents soon went to their fully-fledged bench and made three substitutions, bringing on Manny Aparicio, Sean Young, and debutant Robert Boskovic as they looked to find a goal. Pa-Modou Kah’s side was continuously run to the wings, keeping possession out wide to avoid Cavalry’s extra numbers in midfield.

The greatest chance for the Cavs came after 67 minutes after Anthony Novak made an intriguing call for a penalty while strike partner Joe Mason attempted to lift the ball over Callum Irving. Hernandez came close again later in the second half when a flicked shot troubled Irving, causing the ‘keeper to shuffle the ball away.

All in all, neither side created chances of much quality for various reasons as defensive structure and discipline remained the star of the show from the first minute on.
