Another CPL player has made his international debut.
York9 FC midfielder Ryan Telfer earned his first cap for Trinidad and Tobago on Friday, starting for the Soca Warriors as they battled to a 1-1 road draw against Martinique in CONCACAF Nations League action.
Trinidad hosts Martinique on Monday in another Group C contest in the Nations League. Telfer will miss York’s away game against Forge FC on Sunday at Tim Hortons Field due to his international commitments.
Telfer, 25, joined Y9FC on loan from Toronto FC at the start of the 2019 CPL season. Since then, he has established himself as one of the CPL’s top stars, scoring the first-ever goal in league history and becoming a regular starter for coach Jimmy Brennan’s side. In total, Telfer has five goals in 19 CPL appearances.

Telfer was born in Mississauga, Ont., but was raised in Trinidad. Canadian national team coach John Herdman was monitoring the Y9 midfielder, who was weighing his national team options. But a call up from T&T manager Dennis Lawrence for the country’s first two Nations League matches was the turning point, and Telfer accepted the invite, thus pledging his international future to the Soca Warriors.
Earlier this week, HFX Wanderers midfielder Abd-El-Aziz Yousef made his international debut when he played a full 90 minutes in Somalia’s 1-0 win over Zimbabwe in World Cup qualifying. Yousef, 19, was born in Saudi Arabia, but was raised in Vancouver to parents of Somali origin – that’s how he qualifies to play for Somalia.
Quillan Roberts 24, is also on international duty for Guyana in a pair of Nations League matches against Aruba and Jamaica. It’s the second time the Forge FC goalkeeper has been summoned by the Guyanese national team. Roberts debuted for Guyana in a 1-1 draw against Trinidad and Tobago in the group stage of this summer’s Gold Cup.
