Forge FC sign international attacker Victor Klonaridis

Forge FC announced a second transaction of the day on Friday afternoon, revealing that the club has signed winger Victor Klonaridis.

The 32-year-old arrives in Canada with an extensive résumé of playing at a high level in Europe. He made his professional debut in 2010 after breaking through to the first team of AEK Athens, and would go on to play in the first divisions of Greece, France and Turkey.

Klonaridis spent the longest stretch of his career with Greek giants Panathinaikos, playing 123 matches for the club and helping them win the Greek Cup in 2014. He also won the same trophy with AEK in 2011, and won a league title with them in 2018 after returning to his first club. The Belgian-born attacker has represented a number of other sides including French teams Lille and Lens and Turkish side Ümraniyespor.

Forge’s newest arrival also brings with him significant experience playing continental football. Klonaridis has played 14 games in the UEFA Champions League (five of them in the group stage and nine in qualifying), as well as 19 in the UEFA Europa League. He was part of the AEK side in 2018 that qualified for the Champions League group stage, where they took on traditional European giants Bayern Munich, Ajax and Benfica — the latter of which he scored twice against in their match in Athens.

Klonaridis played in a number of other high-profile European fixtures in his time with AEK and Panathinaikos, also scoring a vital away goal against Celtic in the 2018 Champions League qualification tie.

Over the course of his 14-year professional career, Klonaridis has played almost 200 games in top-flight European leagues, and he has scored 60 goals across all competitions.

This is the second full-time addition Forge have made to the squad on Friday ahead of the CPL’s roster freeze deadline, after announcing earlier that they’ve also signed Orlendis Benítez. Forge also added three players on development contracts.
